There are three special day classes at Mountain View School that are designed to meet the educational needs of children with developmental disabilities.

The primary classes taught has students in K & 1, 2nd through 4th, and the upper grade class taught has students in 4th through 6th grade. Each class also has instructional assistants that work closely with the teacher to provide individual or small group instruction to the students.

All the students have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) which is written, implemented, and reviewed annually with input from the parents, therapists, teachers, and administrator. It is developmentally planned and based on the child's present skills and needs. Specific goals and objectives are taught in the following subjects:

Reading

Written Language

Math Concepts and Applications

Independent Functioning

Behavior/Social Skills

There are therapists also available should a student need specific attention in any of the following areas:

Speech & Language Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Hard of Hearing Services

Adaptive Physical Education

Medical Support

Counseling Services

In addition to classroom and therapy work, the children visit the library and computer lab once a week. They are also offered many opportunities to mainstream with their grade level peers at lunch, recess, assemblies, fieldtrips, special projects, as well as the specialist classes of science, art, music, and physical education. Instructional assistants support the students when they integrate into the general education program by offering assistance and modifying the core curriculum.

The special education team works collaboratively with many school professionals and the family to ensure that each student has a program that is stimulating, encouraging, and supports their individual learning styles.

Henly Ngai

My name is Henly Ngai (rhymes with Bill Nye the science guy), I have taught in three different states in the last 10 years all in the special education program.  The last three years I have taught at Mountain View Elementary school serving students with special needs. Besides spending time with my family, some of my interests are participating in sports, traveling, and trying out new recipes.  Here at Mountain View, I enjoy watching the genuine friendships that my students build over the years. I love getting to know all students that come into my classroom. I consider myself a lifelong learner and value sharing knowledge and working closely with my colleagues.  Just within the last three years, Mountain View has made significant positive changes and teachers make an effort to include our special education students in many ways and activities. I’m excited to be part of this school, the opportunity for ongoing learning growth and I hope to continue to improve as a leader with the students, staff, and community.  In the upcoming school year, I look forward in building the special education program with new staff, working together to overcome any challenges and most importantly findings creative ways to meet students needs.
